## Why Trek in the Everest Region? The Khumbu region is home to the world's highest peak and some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on Earth. But you don't have to trek to Base Camp to experience it — shorter hikes to Everest View Hotel or Khumjung offer stunning panoramas without the altitude risk. ## Popular Routes ### Everest Base Camp Trek (12–14 days) The classic. Fly to Lukla, trek through Sherpa villages, and stand at the foot of Everest. Highlights include Namche Bazaar, Tengboche Monastery, and the Kala Patthar sunrise viewpoint. ### Gokyo Lakes Trek (12–14 days) A less-crowded alternative to EBC with turquoise glacial lakes and views of four 8,000m peaks. Can be combined with a Cho La Pass crossing for the ultimate loop. ### Three Passes Trek (18–20 days) For experienced trekkers — crosses Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La passes with panoramic views that few travelers ever see. ### Everest View Trek (5–7 days) Perfect for those short on time or unsure about altitude. Hike to Namche and the Everest View Hotel viewpoint for classic Everest panoramas. ## Permits You Need 1. **Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit** — Rs 3,000 (foreigners) 2. **TIMS Card** — Rs 2,000 (Trekkers' Information Management System) 3. **Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee** — Rs 2,000 Your guide or agency can arrange all of these in Kathmandu. ## Best Time to Go - **October–November:** Clear skies, stable weather, best visibility. Peak season. - **March–May:** Warmer, rhododendrons in bloom, slightly hazier. Second-best window. - **December–February:** Cold but clear. Fewer trekkers. Some teahouses may be closed. - **June–September:** Monsoon. Avoid unless you're prepared for rain and leeches. ## Altitude Sickness The key risk on any Everest trek. Acclimatize properly — spend an extra day in Namche. Symptoms include headache, nausea, and fatigue. Descend immediately if symptoms worsen. ## What to Pack Layering is essential. Temperatures range from +20°C in the valleys to -15°C at high camps. Bring: - Down jacket and thermal layers - Sturdy trekking boots (broken in!) - Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, glasses) - Headlamp and power bank --- > **Our recommendation:** Start with the Everest View Trek if it's your first time in the Himalaya. You'll get the experience without the commitment of a two-week trek.
